Morocco is set to face Ecuador in a friendly match in Madrid as part of their preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
The Ecuadorian Football Federation announced that the match will take place on March 27 at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in the Spanish capital. Following this fixture, Ecuador will compete against the Netherlands in another friendly on March 31.
This match against Ecuador carries special significance for the Moroccan national team, coming at a critical time after the disappointment of losing the last Africa Cup of Nations final. Despite a strong performance throughout the tournament, the defeat in the final has left a noticeable impact on fans, making the March friendly an opportunity to regroup and regain competitive readiness.
Observers suggest that the choice of Spain for hosting the match is linked to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation’s desire to create a calm environment for training, away from potential tensions that might accompany the team’s first appearance in Morocco after the setback in the Africa Cup.
This match is part of an intensive preparation program leading up to the World Cup, particularly after Morocco was drawn into a strong group alongside Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti. As a result, high-level tests are imperative before the official competition begins.
In the same context, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation is still considering the identity of the team that will face Morocco in a second friendly during the same international break, with discussions hinting at the possibility of it taking place on French soil.
On the technical preparation front, national coach Walid Regragui has commenced his work at the Mohammed VI Football Complex with his assistant staff, finalizing the plans for the March gathering. A closed training camp is expected to take place in Europe from March 23 to 31, 2026, including two friendly matches, while Regragui is anticipated to remain at the helm through the World Cup, with potential adjustments to the support staff.
