More than 2 billion dirhams monthly: nearly 4 million Moroccan families benefit from direct social assistance

The Moroccan government has revealed detailed figures regarding the direct social assistance system, confirming that nearly 3.88 million Moroccan families have received support as of the end of October 2025. The numbers presented by the Minister Delegate for Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa, indicate that this royal initiative has incurred a monthly financial burden exceeding 2 billion dirhams, allocated between child risk protection compensations and direct grants for vulnerable families.

In terms of geographical distribution among beneficiaries, the data shows significant disparities across the regions. The Marrakech-Safi region leads with 15.9% of the total beneficiaries, followed by the Fez-Meknes region at 15.4%, and the Casablanca-Settat region at 13.8%. The Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region also has a substantial presence at 12.5%, while the remaining percentages are distributed among the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, Beni Mellal-Khenifra, Souss-Massa, the Eastern region, and Drâa-Tafilalet, with southern regions recording percentages ranging from 0.1% to 1% based on their demographic composition.

Regarding the nature of compensations, 2.44 million families benefited from allocations aimed at protecting children from risks, with a budget of 1.3 billion dirhams, while 729 million dirhams were allocated as direct aid for 1.44 million families. The program’s philosophy extends beyond traditional family grants to encompass a comprehensive support system targeting school-age children, children with disabilities, and newborns, in addition to supporting the purchasing power of families caring for elderly individuals or those lacking children.

The framework of direct support, according to government clarifications, includes specific amounts for newborns up to 2,000 dirhams for the first birth and 1,000 dirhams for the second, as well as school entry grants in September and additional support for orphans and those with disabilities. This ambitious plan aims to cover approximately 60% of the population previously lacking family compensation systems, marking a significant shift in social security management in Morocco.

In the context of child social protection, the program places special emphasis on orphans and neglected children residing in social welfare institutions, providing specific aid to ensure their dignity. This interim report underscores the government’s commitment to building a “social state” by transforming direct assistance into a sustainable mechanism to reduce class and regional disparities and ensure a minimum income for the most needy families across the country.
