Vienna: Austrian authorities thwart an extremist plot coordinated with the DGST

Austrian authorities announced on Friday the arrest of an Austrian citizen suspected of ties to the Islamic State and involvement in preparations for serious terrorist operations within the country. This action was part of a security operation that relied on extensive international intelligence cooperation, with significant support from Morocco’s General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST).

According to official data, Moroccan intelligence contributions accelerated investigations and refined sensitive information, assisting Austrian agencies in containing the threat before it could be executed. In this context, Secretary of State for Constitutional Protection, Johann Liefried, alongside the Director General of Public Security, Franz Ruf, praised the decisive role played by the DGST, asserting that its expertise was a crucial element in the operation’s success.

The Austrian Ministry of the Interior also confirmed that coordination between the Directorate for State Protection and Intelligence in Austria and its Moroccan counterpart was central to thwarting the plot. It emphasized that partnerships built on trust and information sharing have become a security imperative in combating cross-border threats.

Initial investigations revealed that the suspect was planning to target security forces. A search of his home led to the seizure of electronic devices containing propaganda materials for the extremist organization, along with video recordings in which he pledged allegiance to ISIS. Technical analyses are ongoing, while relevant authorities continue to deepen their investigations to uncover potential expansions of the case.

This operation reflects, according to Austrian officials, the strategic value of international security cooperation, where the DGST emerged as an active partner in supporting Vienna’s proactive efforts, thereby enhancing national security resilience and solidifying a collective approach to counter-terrorism at regional and international levels.
