Putin Emphasizes the Strategic Importance of the Northern Sea Route and the Flourishing Shipping Activity Through It

Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated the growing strategic importance of the Northern Sea Route, deeming it a fundamental pillar not only for Russia but also for international trade amidst global geo-economic shifts, during a meeting on Friday with students from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

Putin clarified that Russia has long been a pioneer in Arctic exploration, highlighting that the country has invested in developing its maritime capabilities there for decades, particularly by constructing unparalleled giant icebreakers.

The Russian president noted that the Northern Sea Route is experiencing unprecedented growth in shipping activity, as it is a strategic passage connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, stretching along the Russian Arctic coast from the Barents Sea, through Siberian shores, to the Far East. Although natural navigation through this passage is only feasible for about two months a year due to ice, the use of icebreakers ensures continuous maritime transit.

Russia possesses the world’s largest icebreaker fleet, which includes eight powerful nuclear icebreakers, such as “Arktika” and “Yamal,” along with around 34 conventional icebreakers. These assets are employed to ensure regular navigation along the Northern Sea Route and to enhance the transport of goods from Siberian ports, thus bolstering Russia’s presence in the Arctic region.

Putin also unveiled plans for future expansion of this fleet with the addition of new icebreakers, such as “Chukotka,” “Leningrad,” and “Stalingrad,” as part of a vision aimed at cementing Russia’s strategic influence in the Arctic and enhancing the role of the Northern Sea Route as an expanding hub in global trade.
