The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced today that Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Cameroon Football Federation, has been suspended for four matches and fined $20,000 due to alleged inappropriate behavior following his country’s loss to Morocco, 2-0, in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
CAF clarified in an official statement that the decision came after reviewing the events during the match, which took place last Friday in the presence of CAF President Patrice Motsepe, amid a tense atmosphere and protests against refereeing decisions. According to media reports, Eto’o appeared to be extremely angry about the officiating, while the match also saw clashes between players from both teams.
CAF had opened an investigation last Sunday regarding the violent altercations that occurred during some matches of the tournament as part of its efforts to enforce discipline and maintain the integrity of the competition.
For its part, the Cameroon Football Federation described the decision as “lacking any clear justification,” expressing concern over what it deemed hasty measures that do not ensure the fundamental requirements for a fair trial. The federation, in an official statement, confirmed its intention to appeal the penalty, reiterating its full support for its president and commitment to credible disciplinary justice principles.
On the competitive front, Morocco is set to face Senegal in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 next Sunday, in an anticipated clash to crown the continental champion.
