UNESCO has officially recognized the Moroccan file for registering the Moroccan caftan as a world heritage item on its list of intangible cultural heritage, announced on Wednesday in India.

This international recognition crowns the ongoing efforts of the Kingdom, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, to preserve and promote Moroccan cultural heritage.

Morocco presented a comprehensive file highlighting the richness and development of the cultural heritage associated with the caftan, prepared by the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication in collaboration with Morocco’s permanent delegation to UNESCO in Paris. The submission focused on crafts and skills, social functions, and the communities that uphold this tradition, adopting a holistic and apolitical approach.

The Moroccan caftan is considered more than just clothing; it is a living symbol of Moroccan identity, passed down through generations for over eight centuries. It embodies exceptional technical and aesthetic heritage celebrated worldwide.

The Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication affirmed that this international achievement is the result of the efforts of all artisans, craftsmen, and Moroccan civil society both inside and outside the country, who contributed to the preservation of cultural heritage and its transmission to future generations.
