Morocco’s national team has entered a complicated scenario for qualification after their 1-1 draw with Mali in the match held on Friday evening at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, as part of the second round of the group stage of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The match, which was expected to be the “key to early qualification,” ended with each team earning just one point. Ibrahim Diaz opened the scoring for the “Atlas Lions” with a penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time in the first half, before Lassi Sienayoko brought the Malian side back into contention with an equalizer, also from the penalty spot, in the 64th minute.
Although the draw kept Morocco at the top of Group A with 4 points, it delayed the official confirmation of their qualification for the knockout stage, making the third round crucial in every respect, from rankings to potential qualifiers.
Current Situation in the Group
Morocco leads Group A with 4 points, followed by Mali and Zambia with 2 points each, while Comoros sits at the bottom with 1 point. This ranking appears comfortable on paper but offers no guarantees ahead of the final round.
Scenarios for Morocco’s Qualification to the Round of 16
Victory over Zambia
This scenario is the simplest and most secure. A win for Morocco in the third round will bring their total to 7 points, granting them a ticket to the knockout stage along with the top spot in the group, regardless of the result of the Mali-Comoros match.
Draw with Zambia
If Morocco settles for a draw, they will reach 5 points, which is sufficient for qualification to the knockout stage. However, the top position will depend on the Mali-Comoros match:
- If Mali draws or wins by less than two goals, Morocco retains the top spot.
- If Mali wins by two goals and Morocco draws without scoring, Morocco qualifies as second.
- If Mali wins by more than two goals, Morocco drops to second place regardless of their own result.
Loss to Zambia
Despite the severity of this scenario, a defeat does not mean immediate elimination. Morocco will still have 4 points, but their ranking will depend on the outcome of the Mali-Comoros match:
- A Mali victory would place Morocco third behind Zambia and Mali (both with 5 points), putting them in the mix for the best third-placed teams.
- A draw between Mali and Comoros guarantees Morocco qualifies as runners-up.
- If Comoros defeats Mali, both teams will have 4 points, but Morocco will advance due to the head-to-head advantage, securing second place.
Risk of Early Encounter
Should Morocco qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, calculations indicate a high likelihood of facing the Egyptian team, leaders of Group B, in the Round of 16, resulting in an “early Arab final” that could disrupt the tournament’s trajectory for both sides.
In conclusion, the draw against Mali was not catastrophic, but it stripped the Moroccan team of the luxury of playing with relaxed nerves. The third round will be a true test of focus, pressure management, and translating ambition into a deserved qualification, befitting a team that many are counting on to progress to the later stages of the Morocco 2025 AFCON.
