Death Toll Rises to 16 in Sydney Attack Targeting Jewish Celebration
The death toll from the shooting that occurred on Sunday evening, December 14, 2025, during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, has risen to 16, with dozens injured and taken to hospitals, marking one of the worst incidents of gun violence in modern Australian history.
New South Wales police confirmed that the attack, which took place during the “Chanukah by the Sea” event attended by thousands, resulted in 16 fatalities, including a 10-year-old girl and several religious figures from the Jewish community, along with at least 40 individuals receiving treatment in local hospitals.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as a terrorist act directed against the Jewish community during their Hanukkah celebrations, calling it “a dark moment in the nation’s history.” He assured that security agencies would spare no effort in apprehending all those involved and restoring safety.
Authorities identified the perpetrators as two individuals (a father and son), with the father (50 years old) dying at the scene after wielding multiple firearms, while the son (24 years old) was injured and apprehended in critical condition. Unexploded explosives were also found in a car they possessed, indicating premeditated planning of the attack.
Videos circulating on social media captured the moments of terror experienced by the attendees, who fled amidst heavy gunfire, in a scene filled with panic on a beach typically bustling with families and visitors on Sundays.
Among the notable scenes from the incident was footage of a Muslim citizen named Ahmad Al Ahmad, who was seen in the video leaping toward one of the gunmen and wresting the weapon from him, helping to stop the attack and save numerous civilians, despite being shot and sustaining injuries before receiving medical assistance.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from global officials and leaders, who labeled the attack as “antisemitic terrorism,” expressing solidarity with Australia and the Jewish community, and emphasizing the need to combat violence and hatred in all forms.
This occurrence comes at a time when Australia is known for its stringent laws regarding the possession and use of firearms, making this incident one of the deadliest in decades and igniting discussions around national security, extremism, and the importance of enhancing preventive measures against such crimes.
