Massive African Funding Supports Air Infrastructure Development in Morocco

The African Development Bank has approved funding of 270 million euros aimed at supporting the expansion and modernization of airport infrastructure in Morocco. This initiative seeks to enhance the competitiveness of the air transport sector and develop key facilities in preparation for the anticipated growth in passenger movement, including preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The program, overseen by the National Airports Office (ONDA), targets increasing the operational capacities of Moroccan airports through infrastructure upgrades, the expansion of air navigation systems, and the enhancement of safety systems. It will also improve passenger services with modern baggage handling equipment and advanced facilities to facilitate movement within airports.

The investment includes airports in Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fez, featuring plans to expand passenger terminals, construct a new control tower in Marrakech, develop 1.5 million square meters of aircraft parking areas, and establish 7.6 kilometers of runways.

Ashraf Hassan Tarsim, the head of the African Development Bank’s office in Morocco, emphasized that enhancing Morocco’s appeal and improving its logistics competitiveness in preparation for a global event such as the 2030 World Cup is a strategic priority. He noted that the project would enhance air safety and provide a smoother and safer travel experience.

Mike Slawoo, Director of Infrastructure and Urban Development at the Bank, pointed out that the program would contribute to boosting tourism dynamics in the kingdom and raising the quality of services at airports to international standards. It is also expected to create thousands of job opportunities for youth and women.

By 2030, the targeted airports are anticipated to reach a capacity of 14 million passengers in Marrakech, 5 million in Agadir, 3.6 million in Tangier, and 3 million in Fez, further solidifying Morocco’s position as a key air transport hub in the region.

The program combines digital solutions and modern equipment to facilitate passenger movement and enhance air transport safety, marking a strategic step towards supporting tourism, trade, and aviation-related investments in the kingdom.
