Tahraoui Announces a Revolution in Drug Management and Enhancing Medical Presence in Rural Areas

The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amin Tahraoui, confirmed that the ministry is moving forward with establishing a structural reform aimed at ending drug supply crises and restoring balance in the national distribution of human resources. During a public session at the Council of Advisors, the minister announced the state’s intention to create a national observatory for drugs in collaboration with the Moroccan Agency for Medicines and Health Products. This institution aims primarily to provide early monitoring of any disruptions in supply chains and track price developments to ensure transparency and support public decision-making with accurate data.

On the logistical management front, the government official revealed the establishment of a unified national drug platform that relies on an information system for managing inventory and interconnected regional warehouses. This project is set to be implemented over the next eighteen months. Alongside these long-term initiatives, the ministry has initiated urgent measures to bolster health sovereignty, evidenced by the dispatch of more than 560 tons of medicines and medical supplies to various regions of the kingdom over the past two months, with significant shipments dedicated to areas affected by cold weather as part of a care operation.

Regarding human resources, Tahraoui emphasized that the ministry succeeded in regularizing the status of over 1,200 specialist doctors within a year, focusing efforts on filling gaps in remote provinces. He clarified that the percentage of appointments in rural areas reached 52% this year, aiming to increase this figure to 72% by 2026 through a regional management approach that prioritizes areas suffering from chronic shortages.

As for the tension within the sector, the minister reiterated his commitment to social dialogue, noting that efforts are underway to complete the legal framework that incentivizes healthcare professionals. He stated that the ministry has already approved decrees concerning compensation for occupational hazards and on-call services, while new regulatory texts are being prepared regarding compensation for work in difficult areas and the variable portion of salaries, confirming that communication channels with unions remain open to overcome any misunderstandings and ensure employee rights within a participatory approach.
