FIFA Launches Expanded Version of the 2026 Series to Enhance Global Competition Among National Teams
FIFA announced the launch of the FIFA 2026 series during the international match windows between March and April of next year, providing teams from various continental federations with a new platform for competition and connection beyond the traditional boundaries of continental tournaments.
This announcement follows the success of the trial version held in March 2024, with the upcoming edition expected to see an expanded participation from a greater number of national federations and more host countries, including a dedicated edition for women’s teams for the first time in the series’ history. This initiative aims to provide high-quality international matches and contribute to the development of football worldwide.
The initiative aligns with FIFA’s strategic goals for 2023-2027, focusing on increasing opportunities for international exposure, achieving better competition balance, and sharing technical expertise between continents, especially for teams that rarely have the chance to face opponents from other regions.
In this context, FIFA President Gianni Infantino stated that the FIFA series aims to provide developmental opportunities for players and coaches while emphasizing the global nature of the game and its values of inclusivity. He noted that the 2026 version will enhance this impact among various groups and foster connections between countries through sports competition.
With growing demand for participation, FIFA unveiled the competition’s organizational structure, stating that the men’s series will include friendly matches hosted by Australia, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Mauritius, Puerto Rico, Rwanda, and Uzbekistan, with discussions ongoing for the inclusion of additional countries in the coming months.
The women’s series will kick off from Brazil, Côte d’Ivoire, and Thailand, with a full list of host and participating countries to be announced in early 2026.
Each group will consist of teams from different continents engaged in friendly matches aimed at raising the technical level, without adding new burdens to the international match calendar. This experience provides teams with multiple opportunities, including:
– Technical development through exposure to different football styles and new playing methods,
– Commercial gains through increased presence of emerging countries in new markets,
– Enhanced cultural exchange between nations through a shared language of football.
It is noteworthy that FIFA’s council approved in December 2022 the launch of the series, allowing countries wishing to enhance their international presence to engage in competitive experiences similar to major tournament atmospheres, thereby contributing to the advancement of the technical and organizational development of these federations.
