Bourita: King Mohammed VI’s Communications Settled Security Council Support for the Autonomy Initiative

Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita stated that King Mohammed VI personally led direct communications just days before the UN Security Council’s historic vote on the autonomy initiative, which tilted the situation in favor of Morocco despite the current complexity of the Council’s makeup.

In an interview broadcast by Channel Two on Saturday evening, Bourita explained that the royal communications took place “five or six days” prior to the vote and contributed to securing broad support for Morocco. He noted that Russia’s abstention from the vote reflects its appreciation of Morocco’s balanced stance on the war in Ukraine, embodying what he termed “the Morocco of the King.”

The minister indicated that the King adopted a strategy in this matter he referred to as “diplomacy of reason and action,” based on concrete initiatives and a precise understanding of international shifts. He pointed out that the King’s visits to China in 2015 and Russia in 2016 “were of great strategic importance today.”

Bourita emphasized that the Kingdom’s international relations are managed with a realistic vision and decision-making independence, adding that “when Morocco speaks, it speaks from its own position and not as an appendage to any party,” asserting that “Morocco’s strength today lies in the clarity and stability of its positions.”
