Will Morocco Also Ban Discord Due to Hacking and Illegal Exploitation?
A A

Will Morocco also ban Discord due to breaches and illegal exploitation?

Jordan’s recent decision to ban Discord has raised widespread questions about the platform’s future in Morocco, amidst increasing calls for its prohibition or regulation.

Discord, which initially started as a communication tool for gamers, has evolved into a comprehensive platform for text, voice, and video chat, live streaming, and screen sharing, allowing thousands of users to coordinate simultaneously.

The demands to ban Discord in Morocco have intensified following a security breach that led to the leak of sensitive personal data for thousands of users, including identity card images. Additionally, the platform has been misused for illegal activities, with some channels turning into black markets for child exploitation and harmful content distribution.

International experiences indicate that countries like Russia, Turkey, China, Iran, the UAE, and Oman have previously banned or restricted the use of the platform for security reasons or to protect children. While some European countries have not resorted to a complete ban, they have imposed stringent regulations. For instance, under the European Digital Services Act (DSA), Discord is required to comply with requests for removing illegal content, placing the platform under increased regulatory pressure.

In Morocco, no official statements have been made yet, but the rising usage of the app among youth and its association with organized activities make Discord’s future a topic of extensive discussion, balancing public safety and ensuring digital communication freedom for young people.
