The United Arab Emirates reiterated its strong and unwavering support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative on Monday, affirming its full backing of the Kingdom’s sovereignty over its southern regions.

This stance was conveyed during a meeting of the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where the UAE representative stated that his country “reaffirms its complete support for the sister Kingdom of Morocco in its sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara.” He pointed out that Morocco’s autonomy initiative “is in line with international law, the UN Charter, and related Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.”

The Emirati diplomat praised the new developmental model launched by Morocco in its southern regions, aimed at improving living conditions and enhancing human development indicators in the area, affirming that these efforts reflect Morocco’s comprehensive vision for the development of the Sahara within the framework of its territorial integrity.

The Emirati representative also expressed his country’s appreciation for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy aimed at achieving a realistic and lasting political solution to this long-standing regional dispute.

The UAE’s position further enhances the growing international support for the Moroccan stance on the Sahara, with major powers such as the United States joining in by officially announcing its support for the Moroccan initiative in 2020, confirming it as “the only serious and realistic option” for resolving the conflict.

Several European countries, including France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Portugal, have also explicitly expressed their support for Morocco’s position, alongside a number of African nations like Ghana and Kenya, which asserted that autonomy represents “the only realistic and sustainable solution.”

This increasing international consensus highlights the isolation of the Polisario Front, backed by Algeria, at a time when Morocco’s role as a regional player continues to be strengthened, receiving growing support for its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
