Today, Monday, October 6, 2025, the annual Nobel Prize season officially began with the announcement of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine as the first award in this year’s series.

The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm is set to announce the name or names of the winners at 11:30 AM local time (09:30 AM GMT).

The prize is usually awarded to one or more winners—up to three individuals—in recognition of significant scientific discoveries in the field of medicine or biology, and they may have worked on the same research topic.

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to American scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA and its role in gene regulation.

Traditionally, the Medicine Prize opens the Nobel Prize season, which will see announcements of the Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace, and Economic Sciences in the coming days.

The official award ceremony will take place on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s (1833-1896) death, the inventor of dynamite and founder of these prestigious awards. This year, each prize is valued at 11 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to 1.1 million US dollars.
