Ouarzazate Transforms into a Sustainable Cultural Tourism Hub Thanks to an AED 820 Million Revival Plan

The Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts, Social and Solidarity Economy has launched an ambitious revival plan to make Ouarzazate a model for sustainable tourism in Morocco, as part of the 2023-2026 roadmap. The total investment amounts to AED 820 million, focusing on three main areas: accommodation, cultural activities, and air connectivity.

Updating the Hotel Sector
Nine strategic hotels that had been closed for years have been reopened, including Résidence Karam and Amanar Hotel, which have already resumed operations. An additional 1,800 new beds are expected, with 75 tourist facilities being upgraded to comply with standards, allowing for the classification of an additional 1,400 beds.

Developing Cultural Spaces and Recreational Activities
The plan emphasizes enhancing the cultural aspect, with the transformation of Jamaa El Fna Square and Kasbah Taourirt into modern heritage and cultural event spaces. The first activities are set to take place starting October 2025. Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will see the renovation of two areas to host exhibitions and art events, with work expected to start in the second half of 2026. The GO SIYAHA program supports 35 innovative projects in the region, including traditional guesthouses and interactive cultural experiences.

Enhancing Air Connectivity
The flight connection between Ouarzazate and London, along with increased flights to France and Spain, has resulted in a 33% increase in air capacity compared to 2019. Further air links are being explored to enhance the international appeal of the destination.

Encouraging Signs of Recovery
By the end of August 2025, passenger traffic at Ouarzazate Airport had risen by 34% compared to 2019, a momentum expected to accelerate in 2026 with the completion of ongoing projects.
