Morocco Records a Record High in Avocado Exports to Switzerland
Morocco has made unprecedented strides in its avocado exports to the Swiss market during the 2024/2025 season, with shipments valued at $12.2 million, equivalent to 3,800 tons. This marks a 2.7-fold increase compared to the previous season and a fourfold rise from the 2021/2022 season, according to data from the Swiss Federal Customs Administration.
With this achievement, Morocco has become the second-largest supplier of avocados to Switzerland, surpassing Spain, Israel, and Chile, while Peru continues to lead the market, covering over 40% of its needs. Morocco’s market share in Switzerland exceeded 15% during the current season.
The entry of Moroccan avocados into the Swiss market dates back to the 2003/2004 season when initial shipments did not exceed 704 kilograms. The exports progressively increased, crossing the 100-ton mark in the 2011/2012 season and 500 tons in 2019/2020.
Moroccan shipments peaked last February, reaching 862 tons and accounting for approximately 40% of the supply in the Swiss market during that month.
This growth is part of a broader rise in avocado demand in Switzerland, with total imports reaching 24,300 tons—an increase of 14% from the previous season and 29% compared to the 2021/2022 season. Additionally, Morocco has been diversifying its markets, exporting over 1,000 tons to Canada in the same season, thereby strengthening its position among the world’s leading avocado exporters.
