Morocco launches an ambitious plan to renew its railway fleet in preparation for hosting the 2030 World Cup

In a significant step aligned with the Kingdom’s future vision, Abdel-Samad Guioq, Minister of Transport and Logistics, announced yesterday, during the weekly question session in Parliament, an ambitious plan to renew the national railway fleet and develop the transport and logistics system. This initiative comes in the context of preparing for the immense opportunities awaiting Morocco by 2030, foremost among them hosting the FIFA World Cup, in an effort to bolster the kingdom’s position as a regional platform for smart and sustainable transport.

The minister clarified that the National Office of Railways will begin updating 346 existing train cars and purchasing 60 new ones, along with acquiring 30 modern locomotives equipped with a 380-volt electricity generation system. He emphasized that this project is part of a comprehensive plan to modernize the national railway fleet. Guioq also launched a project to acquire 168 new trains, including 18 high-speed trains, to support national preparations for the World Cup.

Regarding road safety, the minister highlighted that the National Road Safety Agency is coordinating with various stakeholders to reduce traffic accidents, indicating a 15.64% decrease in the death rate between 2015 and 2024, contrasted with a 63.04% increase among motorcycle users, which necessitates a collective mobilization from all concerned parties.

Guioq added that transport dedicated to workers is subject to the established laws and specifications, and that the ministry will initiate a study to determine the size of the fleet for transporting people and goods, with results to be presented to Parliament soon.

The minister affirmed that this initiative embodies the government’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and enhancing citizens’ safety, within a comprehensive vision aimed at making Moroccan transport more efficient and sustainable, in line with the major national development ambitions.
