Arab-African Consensus Demands the Suspension of Polisario Membership in Kampala: A New Diplomatic Victory for Morocco

Arab-African Consensus Demands the Suspension of Polisario Membership in Kampala: A New Diplomatic Victory for Morocco
A A

In a new diplomatic victory for Morocco, a majority of Arab and African countries during the Arab and African Youth Council conference held in Kampala, Uganda, unanimously rejected the request for membership from the Polisario Front, with more than 47 countries participating in the vote. This decision dealt a significant blow to Algeria’s efforts to legitimize a body that lacks international recognition.

The Moroccan delegation, which included representatives from the youth wings of the Socialist Union and the Istiqlal Party, confronted the attempts by the Algerian delegation to introduce elements of the separatist front under an official guise, affirming that the council comprises only sovereign, recognized states. This firm stance received widespread support from participating delegations, who opposed the politicization of the continental youth space or its exploitation for separatist agendas.

During discussions, the Moroccan delegation provided a detailed presentation about the fabricated conflict in Western Sahara, highlighting the autonomy initiative as a practical option that enjoys increasing international support. They also emphasized that the Polisario Front is merely a political tool used by Algeria to hinder regional stability.

In the closing session, the council president officially announced the rejection of the Algerian request, confirming that the organization adheres to the principles of unity and respect for state sovereignty. This resolution was met with extensive applause from representatives of Arab and African countries, who viewed the outcome as a reaffirmation of the rejection of divisive narratives and a support for the unity of peoples.

This move was seen as a further triumph for Moroccan youth diplomacy, which continues to strengthen its presence in Africa through a rational discourse based on dialogue and persuasion, enhancing Morocco’s image as an influential regional actor and a steadfast defender of unity and sovereignty.
