The Belgian Parliament is moving towards supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and adopting autonomy as the sole solution to this regional dispute.
According to international media sources, the proposal was initially scheduled for a vote this September; however, developments regarding the Palestinian issue, particularly the Belgian government’s intention to recognize the State of Palestine, have led to its postponement. Political discussions on this matter are expected to resume before the end of the current year.
This initiative aligns with a series of statements from Brussels, which has repeatedly praised the Moroccan initiative, describing it as serious and reliable. Recently, Belgian Foreign Minister Bernard Quintin asserted in Rabat that his country views the autonomy proposal as “a solid foundation for a solution that is acceptable to all.”
This parliamentary stance bolsters the international support for the Moroccan initiative, as major global powers such as the United States, France, Spain, and the United Kingdom have adopted a similar position, viewing autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as a realistic and practical option for resolving the Western Sahara conflict.
