South Korea Aims to Make Artificial Intelligence a Key Growth Engine

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung affirmed his commitment to developing the artificial intelligence industry, positioning it as a growth engine for the next generation through investment.

Lee announced his goal of making South Korea one of the top three countries in the world in artificial intelligence by launching a National AI Strategic Committee, which he will chair. The committee will include a permanent vice president, 34 private sector members, and 13 ministers.

According to Lee, as reported by Yonhap News Agency, “South Korea stands at a historic crossroads that will determine whether we remain a technologically dependent country at risk of falling behind or become leaders enjoying endless opportunities.”

He added, “Our vision to become one of the top three countries in artificial intelligence is a crucial survival strategy that will shape the future of our nation.”

Lee warned that falling behind would lead to technological dependency, industrial regression, and deepening inequality, urging bold action to advance the transformation of artificial intelligence.

During the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Committee, Lee outlined four strategies to enhance the AI industry.

He emphasized the need to create inclusive and human-centered artificial intelligence that is easily accessible and usable by everyone, pledging strategic government investment to support the private sector and enhance global competitiveness.

He pointed out the necessity to reform systems in administration, healthcare, and education to make society “AI-friendly.”

Additionally, he stressed the importance of promoting industries related to artificial intelligence, building infrastructure, and nurturing talent in ways that ensure balanced regional growth.
