Morocco Strengthens Partnership with Mauritania in Energy and Mining Sectors, Reaffirms Commitment to African Integration

The Director of the Mining and Hydrocarbons Assets and Investment Promotion Department at the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Khalid Amrouch, revealed that Morocco’s participation in the recent “Mauritanid” conference in the capital, Nouakchott, reflects Morocco’s commitment to enhancing South-South cooperation, particularly with Mauritania, with which the kingdom has long-term partnerships in geology, energy, and mining.

Amrouch added, in a statement to the Maghreb Arab Press, that the goal of Moroccan participation in this regional event is to solidify existing cooperative ties and explore new opportunities for joint investment. He noted that Morocco is keen to strengthen this cooperation through joint training programs and the exchange of expertise between the relevant institutions in both countries.

He indicated that the partnership between the two countries has been particularly strengthened within the framework of the Nigeria-Morocco Atlantic Gas Pipeline project, where a tripartite agreement was signed between the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines, the Mauritanian Petroleum Company, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. This reflects the shared commitment to support African energy integration.

Regarding the qualifications that Morocco offers in the fields of energy and mining, Amrouch pointed out that the kingdom enjoys a strategic geographical location, diverse sedimentary basins covering an exploratory area exceeding 500,000 square kilometers, in addition to advanced infrastructure and clear investment regulations, making it a natural partner for Mauritania in this sector.

Concerning the strategy of the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Amrouch confirmed that the institution is working on developing future projects focused on clean energies such as natural hydrogen and geothermal energy, along with building an advanced geological database, while emphasizing the importance of supporting sustainable projects and enhancing cooperation with African partners, particularly Mauritania.
