Morocco Strengthens Its Air Service Network in Africa with New Agreement with Rwanda
In a move that reflects the strengthening of cooperation between Morocco and Rwanda in the field of air transport, Minister of Transport and Logistics Abdul Samad Qayouh signed an important agreement on Thursday in Montreal, Canada, with Rwanda’s Ambassador to Canada, Hejiro Prosper. This agreement was established on the sidelines of the 42nd session of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) General Assembly, aiming to facilitate the expansion of international air transport opportunities between the two countries and develop a strategic partnership in the field of air transport.
This agreement demonstrates the commitment of both countries to enhance cooperation in the civil aviation sector, allowing airlines from both nations to exchange flights and provide a variety of services for travelers. It also aims to enhance safety and security in international air transport, in line with Morocco and Rwanda’s commitment to the International Civil Aviation Agreement, signed in Chicago in 1944.
In a statement following the signing of the agreement, the Moroccan Minister of Transport and Logistics emphasized that this step is part of efforts to strengthen air links with the African continent, considering Rwanda as a strategic destination for Royal Air Maroc, which currently operates flights to around 27 African countries, totaling 600 flights weekly. Qayouh mentioned that the Moroccan airline is considering opening new routes to Rwanda, along with adding a new fleet of aircraft, in accordance with the royal vision to enhance air connectivity between Africa and the Kingdom.
The Minister further added that the agreement aligns with the major plans that the Kingdom aims to implement, including the new Casablanca Airport project, expected to open in 2029, which will be part of the strategy to expand the capacity of Moroccan airports from 40 million passengers annually to 80 million by 2030.
