Italian Newspaper: Tangier Med Port is the Heart of Global Trade in the Mediterranean
On September 22, 2025, the Italian newspaper “Panorama” published an extensive report highlighting the strategic transformations of Tangier Med Port, considering it a pivotal point in reshaping the global trade map.
The article notes that Tangier Med Port is situated at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, in the heart of the Strait of Gibraltar, which separates Europe and Africa. Today, it is one of the busiest ports in the region, receiving approximately 130,000 vessels annually, equivalent to about 400 ships per day, with a throughput exceeding 60 million containers.
Since the opening of the first container terminal in 2007, the port has witnessed remarkable growth, becoming the first in Africa for the eighth consecutive year and the leading port in the Mediterranean for five consecutive years, surpassing major ports such as Barcelona, Marseille, and Genoa.
Globally, the port ranks 17th, handling over ten million containers annually, and this growth has bolstered Morocco’s position in the global trade arena, linking it to more than 80 countries and 200 ports worldwide.
Tangier Med Port’s role extends beyond being a transit point for goods; it serves as a comprehensive logistics hub comprising industrial, logistics, and free zones. This unique model has attracted significant investments and has contributed to the creation of over 130,000 direct jobs, accounting for 1% of Morocco’s GDP.
The automotive industry has been one of the primary beneficiaries, with Renault establishing its largest factory in Africa and the Middle East in the industrial zone adjacent to the port, with an annual production capacity of 400,000 vehicles. This was followed by Stellantis with another factory producing 200,000 vehicles annually, bringing total car exports from the port to 600,000 vehicles each year.
Tangier Med Port is a vital connection point between Europe, Asia, and Africa, facilitating over 35% of the trade traffic headed to West Africa and about one-third of that toward Europe. This strategic advantage is a direct result of its location at the entrance to the Mediterranean, making it a key transit point in global trade routes.
Tangier Med Port has also embraced environmental sustainability through innovative projects, having become a “green port” by utilizing 100% renewable energy to supply electricity to ships. It has also installed the first floating solar power station on a water dam, contributing to the reduction of water evaporation and the generation of clean energy.
These initiatives are part of Morocco’s strategy to achieve its environmental transition goals, particularly in hydrogen production and combating climate change.
As 2030 approaches, when Morocco will co-host the World Cup with Spain and Portugal, Tangier Med Port continues to prepare for capacity expansion, having begun work on the expansion of the passenger terminal, which currently accommodates three million travelers annually, with expectations to double this number.
The article concludes by noting that Tangier Med Port experiences daily traffic of over 2,000 trucks transporting agricultural, textile, and industrial components to Europe, reflecting its vital role in supporting the national economy and enhancing Morocco’s position on the global trade map.
