Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy Sentenced to Five Years in Prison in Libyan Financing Case

In a historic judicial decision, the Criminal Court in Paris on September 25, 2025, sentenced former French President Nicolas Sarkozy to five years in prison after being convicted of “participating in a criminal conspiracy” related to the illegal financing of his 2007 election campaign, which was allegedly funded by the regime of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya.

Despite being acquitted of corruption charges and the misuse of Libyan public funds, the court confirmed that Sarkozy allowed close associates to seek financial support from Libyan authorities for his campaign, which constituted participation in a criminal plot. The ruling imposed a fine of €100,000 on Sarkozy and mandated that the sentence be served immediately, meaning he must start serving his time even if he appeals the verdict.

Two of his former aides, Claude Guéant and Brice Hortefeux, were also convicted on similar charges. Guéant was sentenced to six years in prison, while Hortefeux received a two-year sentence.

It is noteworthy that Sarkozy, 70, announced his intention to appeal the ruling, describing the decision as a “political scandal” and “injustice.” This marks his third conviction after previously being found guilty in corruption cases and illegal financing of his earlier election campaigns.

This ruling underscores the French judiciary’s firm stance on addressing cases of illegal political financing and brings back to mind the legal ramifications of linking electoral campaigns to foreign sources.
