China on the Brink of Reducing Global Dependence on Fossil Fuels by 2030

A report released by the British research center Ember on Tuesday, September 9, reveals that China could become a turning point in global fossil fuel consumption by 2030, thanks to its accelerating reliance on renewable energies.

The significant expansion of solar and wind energy capabilities, along with an increasing electrification of the Chinese economy, is creating the conditions for a sustainable transition, as indicated in the report. In the first half of 2025, renewable energies covered the entire increase in electricity demand, leading to a 2% drop in the use of fossil resources within the country.

China plays a pivotal role in this dynamic, not only through its internal transformation but also via its massive exports of low-cost green technology. Last year, Beijing allocated $625 billion to clean energy, which accounts for about a third of global investment in the sector, signaling the possibility of reconciling economic growth with climate goals.

However, the report warned of the potential consequences for coal, oil, and gas-exporting countries, which will need to restructure their economies to keep pace with shifts in global demand.
