The Red River Bridge in Laayoune: Morocco’s Largest Road Structure Enhancing North-South Connectivity

In the heart of the Moroccan desert, specifically in Laayoune, one of the largest road projects in the history of the Kingdom is making remarkable progress. This project involves the construction of a giant bridge that is expected to bring a transformative change to the national transport infrastructure. The bridge, built over the Red River, is a key component of the highway linking Tiznit to Dakhla, aimed at enhancing road connectivity between the northern and southern regions of the country.

This unique bridge spans a length of 1,648 meters and a width of 21.4 meters, with construction currently exceeding 23% completion, as confirmed by Mubarak Fencha, the director of the temporary agency responsible for executing the project. The structure is anticipated to facilitate through traffic, alleviate the pressure on Laayoune’s entrances, and boost connectivity between the southern provinces and other regions of Morocco.

The total estimated cost of the project is approximately 1.38 billion dirhams, utilizing 15 deep foundations stretching over more than 9 kilometers, reflecting the high level of complexity and technical precision required. The bridge is expected to feature two separate lanes for vehicles and pedestrian walkways, fully complying with the highest standards of safety and environmental sustainability, with completion scheduled for July 2027.
