Morocco Showcases Its Energy Transition Experience at the India-Africa Business Summit
Morocco’s pioneering experience in the field of energy transition, under the insightful vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, was highlighted in the Indian capital, New Delhi, during the twentieth edition of the India-Africa Business Summit, a key platform for South-South cooperation.
In a general session titled “The Future of Energy: Towards Sustainable and Clean Solutions,” Mohamed Ouahmd, Secretary General of the Energy Transition Sector, emphasized that Morocco was among the first countries to anticipate climate challenges by launching a national strategy in 2009 focused on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and regional integration through interconnections with Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa.
The official noted that this vision has enabled the kingdom to achieve a renewable energy capacity of approximately 5.5 gigawatts, representing 45.5% of total energy and 27% of national production by the end of 2024. He also unveiled an investment program for the period 2025-2030, valued at $12 billion, which includes the addition of 15,672 megawatts, 80% of which will come from clean sources, along with battery storage projects (1,500 megawatts) and the establishment of natural gas plants (3,200 megawatts) to ensure the flexibility of the energy system.
Additionally, Ouahmd presented “Morocco’s Hydrogen Offer,” which attracted interest from around 40 investment alliances, including seven projects currently in the selection process. He highlighted legislative reforms aimed at enhancing the sector’s attractiveness for private investors.
During a roundtable discussion on “Energy and Minerals,” he underscored the interconnection between the two sectors, considering that reforms in the mining industry serve as a lever for energy sovereignty and the national economy.
It is noteworthy that the summit, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with the Indian ministries of commerce and external affairs, serves as a pivotal platform for strengthening cooperation between India and Africa. The Moroccan delegation participated with the involvement of the Moroccan Agency for Investment and Export Development (AMDIE) and the Kingdom’s Embassy in New Delhi.
