Follow-Up

Yesterday, the White House hosted a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and European Union leaders. The gathering appeared friendly on the surface, but varying positions and statements revealed ongoing disagreements among allies.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Zelensky was noticeably more eager to express gratitude compared to his previous encounter with Trump in February, during which he faced criticism from Americans. Within just a few minutes, Zelensky thanked the U.S. president over ten times, with the Washington Post counting 11 instances in under five minutes, while CNN noted he said “thank you” four times in the first ten seconds alone.

However, beneath the pleasantries, Western media detected signs of divergence. The Times reported that the meeting unveiled “the first visible signs of ongoing differences,” while The Economist highlighted that both parties avoided addressing contentious issues in front of the media.

Zelensky’s change in appearance also attracted attention. He abandoned his military attire for a formal suit, seen as an attempt to project a more diplomatic image.

Trump, for his part, did not rule out the possibility of a future trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin if negotiations make progress.

Simultaneously, Ukraine launched attacks on strategic sites within Russia, while Moscow announced the downing of a drone targeting the Smolensk nuclear power station and thwarted an attempt to detonate a bomb on the Crimean bridge.
