Former South African President Supports Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Western Sahara and Commends Ghana’s Support

During a lecture at the Polytechnic University in Accra, former South African President Jacob Zuma stated that the attempt to separate Morocco from its Sahara constitutes an attack on African unity and serves external agendas. He reaffirmed his support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as a solution to the Sahara dispute.

Zuma praised Ghana’s supportive stance towards Morocco’s initiative, noting that “Africa should not be divided to please outsiders,” and described the era of partitioning the continent for external interests as over. He emphasized that the priority for the continent must be stability and integration, lauding Ghana for positioning itself “at the forefront of African leadership.”

During his remarks, Zuma stated, “The days of Africa dancing to the rhythms of outsiders are over; we will beat our own drums,” referencing the sovereignty of African decisions over the continent’s internal affairs.

This position comes two weeks after Zuma’s party renewed its support for the autonomy proposal during a press conference in Johannesburg, responding to the controversy surrounding Zuma’s recent visit to Morocco, which coincided with official criticism from the government and the ruling party in Pretoria.

Nathi Nhleko, the national president of the party, mentioned that Zuma’s visit to Rabat was a continuation of discussions that began in 2017 between him and King Mohammed VI, aimed at strengthening the normalization of relations between South Africa and Morocco.
