Moroccan international Sofyan Amrabat’s late goal in the 86th minute wasn’t enough to secure a victory for his Turkish team, Fenerbahçe, which fell to a 2-1 defeat against Dutch side Feyenoord in the first leg of the third round of UEFA Champions League qualifiers at the De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam.
Amrabat, who played the full match, equalized for Fenerbahçe with a late goal that reignited hope for the Turkish team, only for Feyenoord to quickly dampen those ambitions by scoring the winning goal in the 90+1 minute through Anis Haj Moussa.
The opener was a result of an own goal, with Fenerbahçe’s Mert Müldor inadvertently putting the ball into his own net in the 19th minute, allowing the home side to end the first half ahead by one goal.
The match showcased notable Moroccan representation, with Youssef En-Nesyri starting alongside Amrabat before being substituted in the 84th minute by coach José Mourinho.
Fenerbahçe will need to rectify their defeat in the return leg, scheduled for next Tuesday (August 12) at 18:00 GMT+1, at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul.
