The Ministry of Health launches a national program to rehabilitate 83 hospitals and enhance healthcare services in Morocco.
The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Ameen Tahraoui, announced the launch of a national program aimed at rehabilitating 83 hospitals with a total capacity of 8,700 beds, of which 1,729 beds are scheduled to come into service in 2025, and an additional 2,056 beds are planned for 2028.
During a session of oral questions at the House of Representatives, the minister confirmed that the ministry continues to implement an ambitious investment policy to rehabilitate and develop public healthcare institutions, with the goal of strengthening national healthcare services, expanding accessibility, and improving the quality of services offered.
The minister outlined major rehabilitation projects extending to 2030, including the construction of five new university hospitals in Agadir, Laayoune, Errachidia, Guelmim, and Beni Mellal, as well as the complete reconstruction of Ibn Sina Hospital in Rabat, which will accommodate 3,807 beds. He emphasized that the rehabilitation process also includes upgrading existing university hospitals in Fez, Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech, and Oujda by renewing their infrastructure and equipping them with the latest medical technologies.
The ministry continues its efforts in rural areas by implementing a national program to rehabilitate 1,400 healthcare centers, with 950 centers already rehabilitated to date, and work ongoing to complete the remaining centers by the end of 2025. The minister noted that 71% of healthcare infrastructure is located in rural areas, comprising 2,186 institutions, including 433 second-level centers equipped with maternity units or emergency services.
The minister confirmed that improving the patient experience remains a priority for the ministry, with reforms aimed at enhancing reception and guidance services, modernizing hygiene and safety systems, providing digital stations for patient navigation, standardizing appointment systems, and integrating digitization into treatment pathways within healthcare facilities.
