The investment in the liquid sanitation sector in Morocco has reached a value of approximately 48.58 billion dirhams by the end of 2024. This includes 25.33 billion dirhams in completed projects and 23.25 billion dirhams in various stages of execution or commencement.

During a session of oral questions at the House of Councillors, Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit reported that the state has contributed about 17.67 billion dirhams through the liquid sanitation and solid waste management fund, of which 11.67 billion dirhams has been spent effectively until the end of 2024.

The Ministry of Interior has also contributed to financing these projects with a total of 3.10 billion dirhams, derived from local communities’ share of value-added tax, with 2.2 billion dirhams mobilized by the end of last year. The minister noted that these investments have led to significant progress in national sanitation indicators, with 223 cities and urban centers out of 385 equipped with sewage networks and wastewater treatment plants, benefiting around 21 million people.

Currently, work continues in an additional 72 cities and urban centers to cover the needs of 1.25 million residents, while interventions have been programmed for 90 cities and centers during the period from 2025 to 2034. In rural areas, only 43 out of 1,207 centers have been equipped with sewerage networks and treatment plants, benefiting 105,000 people. Work has begun to equip an additional 170 centers for the benefit of 442,000 residents.

The minister also indicated that treated wastewater has become an alternative resource used for irrigation in green spaces, with this water being used to irrigate 30 golf courses and green areas in 16 municipalities, along with six industrial projects. The total volume of treated and reused water in 2024 amounted to approximately 53 million cubic meters.

Additionally, an ambitious national program has been launched, extending from 2025 to 2034, with a financial allocation estimated at 56 billion dirhams. Out of this, 27 billion dirhams will complete 389 ongoing or forthcoming projects, and 29 billion dirhams will go towards implementing 694 new projects concerning sewage networks and the reuse of wastewater. This program comes in the context of activating the agreements signed between the state and regions within the framework of the national dialogue on advanced regionalization held in December 2024.

The minister confirmed that the liquid sanitation sector has undergone a tangible transformation since 2006, contributing to improved sanitation services within communities through the execution of structural projects, the expansion of networks, and the establishment of treatment plants, positively impacting the environmental and social conditions in the kingdom.
