The International Atomic Energy Agency Commends Morocco’s Leadership in Scientific Cooperation and Sustainable Development

Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), affirmed that Morocco has become a reference partner for the agency and a key contributor to enhancing South-South cooperation in scientific and technical fields, thanks to the multiple reforms initiated under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.

He praised Morocco’s active and constructive role within the agency, highlighting its contributions to promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear technology, both nationally and across the African continent, considering it a center of excellence and a channel for cooperation with African countries with limited capabilities.

Grossi described Morocco as a reliable partner and a key player within the governance bodies of the agency, pointing out the prominent role the Kingdom played during its presidency of the General Conference in 2020, facilitating consensus among members.

He acknowledged Morocco’s advanced technical profile in nuclear energy applications across various sectors, including health, environment, and agriculture, noting the Kingdom’s contribution to strengthening the capacities of African nations in a spirit of solidarity and regional integration.

Grossi also highlighted the role of the National Center for Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology as a hub for training and skill transfer, commending the presence of numerous African trainees and experts receiving advanced technical training at this center, which reflects Morocco’s leadership in this field.

He expressed deep appreciation for the ongoing technical cooperation between the agency and Morocco in various fields such as radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, water management, and climate-smart agriculture, along with cooperation in isotopic hydrology to improve water resource management.

The active participation of the Kingdom in the “Hope Rays” cancer treatment program and “Atoms for Food” initiative, aimed at developing drought-resistant crops, was also emphasized, with Grossi stating that Morocco serves as a successful model in harnessing nuclear technology to achieve sustainable development goals.

He expressed admiration for King Mohammed VI’s vision regarding harmonious and sustainable development, confirming that Morocco’s progress in health, agriculture, and science has been facilitated by royal directives and a long-term strategic vision adopted by the state.
