Tamk Inspects Construction Sites of Prisons in Beni Karir and Chichaoua to Alleviate Overcrowding
Mohamed Salah Tamk, the General Delegate for Prison Administration and Rehabilitation, conducted an inspection visit to the construction sites of the new prisons in Beni Karir and Chichaoua on Monday, July 7, 2025, to assess the progress of these projects aimed at improving the prison infrastructure in the kingdom.
An informed source revealed that during this visit, Tamk reviewed the progress of the construction of the local prison in Beni Karir, which began in January 2024 and is expected to open by the end of this year, with a capacity of nearly 2,700 beds, making it one of the largest penal institutions in terms of capacity nationwide.
In this context, the visit also included the open construction site of the new local prison in Chichaoua, where work commenced in April 2025. It is anticipated to provide approximately 1,300 beds upon completion, adding significant capacity to the prison offering in the region.
These projects are part of the General Delegation’s strategy to reduce the phenomenon of overcrowding within prison facilities and to improve accommodation and rehabilitation conditions, aligning with Morocco’s commitments to human rights and reflecting the Delegation’s dedication to ensuring a balanced distribution of prison infrastructure at the regional level.
