Spanish Authorities: Excessive Speed Blamed for the Tragic Accident That Claimed the Lives of Diogo Jota and His Brother
Spanish authorities are continuing their investigations into the tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of Portuguese star Diogo Jota, a player for Liverpool FC, and his brother André Silva, who played for Portuguese club Belenenses. Their vehicle overturned and caught fire early last Thursday.
Spanish media sources reported that a nearly completed forensic report suggests that exceeding the speed limit was the main factor behind the tragedy. The report confirmed that Jota was driving the Lamborghini at the time of the accident, and that the vehicle was traveling well above the legal speed limit on Spanish highways.
The accident occurred at kilometer 65 on the road leading to Santander, where the brothers were headed to the port to catch a ferry to England. Jota intended to join his team’s training camp in preparation for the new season after undergoing lung surgery, following which doctors advised against air travel.
Sources from the Spanish Civil Guard indicated that the accident happened while Jota was trying to overtake another vehicle when one of the car’s tires suddenly blew out. This caused him to lose control and veer off the road before the car caught fire in a catastrophic manner.
Initial investigations revealed that the vehicle was traveling at a speed significantly exceeding 120 kilometers per hour, based on tire marks on the road and technical data from the accident site. Investigations are ongoing to determine all circumstances related to this devastating incident that has left a deep shock in European sports circles.
