Morocco Continues to Strengthen Its Position as a Global Source of Green Hydrogen

Morocco is advancing its ambitious project in the field of green hydrogen as part of its energy strategy aimed at reinforcing its status as a primary source of renewable energy on a global scale.

The Spanish newspaper “La Razón” confirmed that the kingdom is relying on its abundant natural resources from solar and wind energy to establish its position as a key player in the renewable gas market, with green hydrogen at the forefront.

The strategic “Chabika” project exemplifies this momentum, with an expected total installed capacity of 1 gigawatt of renewable energy. Located near the Atlantic coast in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, the project aims to produce green hydrogen through the electrolysis of desalted seawater, achieving a conversion capacity of up to 200,000 tons of green ammonia annually for export to the European market.

Through this project, Morocco aspires to position itself as a global reference hub for green hydrogen production and to develop this technology across Africa.

The kingdom has set a goal to raise the share of renewable energy to 52% of its installed electrical capacity by 2030, compared to 37.6% currently, which equals approximately 10 gigawatts of clean energy. This energy volume will enable the production of up to one million tons of green hydrogen annually.

According to estimates from the Spanish newspaper, Morocco may surpass Spain by 30% in terms of green hydrogen production by 2050, with the potential to meet up to 5% of European demand, thereby enhancing its strategic role in the global energy market.
