Maduro’s Camp Declares Landslide Victory in Municipal Elections Amid Opposition Boycott

The camp of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced on Monday a sweeping victory in the municipal elections, with a voter turnout of around 44% amid a widespread boycott by the opposition.

In an official speech, Maduro confirmed that the United Socialist Party of Venezuela won 285 out of 335 municipalities, noting that over six million voters participated in this election, according to the electoral authority, which faces sharp criticism from the opposition for its alleged ties to the president.

These results coincide with the first anniversary of Maduro’s reelection in a presidential election that stirred significant controversy. At that time, the National Electoral Council announced Maduro’s victory without disclosing the number of votes, justifying this by claiming his system was subject to cyberattacks—a rationale challenged by independent experts.

For its part, the opposition insists it is the true victor in the elections, accusing the government of employing fraudulent tactics. Much of the opposition boycotted the legislative elections in May, which resulted in Maduro’s camp winning 253 seats out of 285, according to the National Electoral Council.
