A direct flight connecting Barcelona and Essaouira has been inaugurated to enhance international and tourism links.

On Thursday, a plane from Spanish airline Vueling landed at Essaouira-Mogador Airport, marking the launch of a new air route between Barcelona and Essaouira.

A ceremony was held at the airport attended by local officials, tourism sector stakeholders, and company representatives to celebrate this event, which reflects the growing appeal of the city in global tourism markets.

In a statement to the Maghreb Arab Press, Essaouira-Mogador Airport Director Abdel Monaim Outoul praised the launch of this route, noting that it represents the first direct link between Essaouira and Barcelona. He mentioned that the airline will operate two flights weekly between the two cities, considering this route a significant addition to the air offerings available at Essaouira Airport, which has seen continuous growth in recent years.

The number of travelers passing through the airport increased by 28 percent in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year, indicating a growing dynamism at this air facility. The airport currently connects to around ten international destinations, mostly in Europe, in addition to a domestic route linking Essaouira with the capital, Rabat. New routes to Nantes in France and Sevilla in Spain are expected to be launched during the summer season.

Ridwaan Khan, head of the regional tourism council, confirmed that the new route will help boost both domestic and international tourism, facilitating direct access for visitors coming from Spain and other European countries through Barcelona, which serves as a key transit point. He highlighted the role of the Moroccan National Tourism Office and its effective partnership in supporting efforts to enhance air connectivity for Essaouira and promote it as a global destination.

Many travelers expressed their satisfaction with the opening of this route, noting the comfort and time-saving benefits it offers. This route is part of a broader strategy to improve access to the city, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, which continues to solidify its position on the international tourism map.
