Local authorities in Beni Mellal Province reported that a 45-year-old man ended his protest sit-in on the evening of Friday, July 11, 2025, by jumping from a water tower after wrapping a rope around his neck.

The individual was quickly transported to Beni Mellal Regional Hospital, where he is currently in the intensive care unit.

The authorities explained that their various interventions during the sit-in focused on attempting to save the individual from the danger he had put himself in, through opening channels of dialogue and persuasion with the presence of several of his relatives and acquaintances, as well as representatives of the regional human rights committee. However, he refused to respond to any proposals or interventions.

In a dangerous escalation on Friday night, the protester deceived civil protection officials by claiming to be suffering from a health issue and requested their assistance. As two members intervened to provide aid, he took one of them hostage and assaulted him with a sharp object, before tying him up and pushing him from the top of the tower. The incident resulted in severe injuries to the civil protection officer, necessitating urgent surgery to treat multiple fractures.

In light of this serious development, elements of the royal gendarmerie intervened in an attempt to put an end to the individual’s actions, during which he violently resisted using sharp and blunt objects and threw stones. After being cornered, he fell from the top of the tower despite the installation of a shock-absorbing mat at the base in an attempt to secure his rescue.

A judicial investigation has been opened under the supervision of the relevant public prosecutor’s office, aimed at uncovering all the circumstances surrounding this incident.
