Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi has called for strengthening the role of the Council of Arab Justice Ministers to enhance Arab cooperation in the field of justice, in light of current challenges and available opportunities. He made this statement during the opening of the 74th session of the Council’s Executive Bureau, held today, Wednesday, in Rabat.
Ouahbi emphasized the importance of reinforcing the binding nature of the council’s decisions to ensure its effectiveness. He pointed out the need for establishing a permanent institutional mechanism to monitor the implementation of these decisions through regular evaluative and review meetings. He also encouraged drawing from successful experiences in other regional blocs, such as Europe and Asia, to achieve legislative convergence that serves the interests of Arab peoples.
The Moroccan minister proposed the creation of a think tank within the council dedicated to formulating a comprehensive vision for the development of its operational mechanisms, noting that the meeting takes place at a critical time that requires concerted efforts to ensure the security and stability of Arab countries.
For his part, Mohamed Amin Ould Akik, Assistant Secretary-General of the council’s technical secretariat, explained that the agenda includes important projects, including the Arab Convention on Combating Terrorism, model laws on combating drugs and hate speech, and the protection of displaced persons.
The meeting also saw the election of Saudi Minister of Justice Walid bin Mohammed Al-Samaani as the new president of the Executive Bureau for a two-year term. The participants discussed several topics related to combating terrorism and its financing, money laundering, and cybercrime, highlighting the significance of Arab and international cooperation in these areas.
