Disaster at 5 July Stadium: Rising Death Toll Reveals Fragility of Algerian Infrastructure

Express TV: Mustafa Filali

The 5 July Stadium in the capital, Algiers, has witnessed a new humanitarian disaster, with the victim count rising to three dead and 74 injured following the collapse of part of the stands during a match between CR Belouizdad and NRM Belouizdad in the first professional league.

The tragedy reflects a grim reality regarding the state of sports infrastructure in Algeria, as initial investigations reveal multiple signs of structural fragility. The crumbling stands that collapsed under the weight of fans were merely the last straw in a system suffering from chronic neglect. Technical reports indicate that 78% of Algerian stadiums do not meet the minimum international safety standards, while 62% lack essential safety certificates.

These shocking figures translate into a palpable reality characterized by structural cracks, worn-out seats, weak evacuation systems, and a glaring absence of basic first-aid facilities. The situation becomes even more alarming given that 43% of these sports facilities have exceeded their lifespan by more than 15 years without any serious renovation efforts.

Experts assert that this disaster was not surprising for those who have been following the series of recurring collapses in public facilities in Algeria, with the past five years alone recording 17 similar incidents in various sporting venues, all of which could have been avoided with simple maintenance actions. This vicious cycle of neglect and calamities raises significant questions about the worthiness of the military establishment’s focus on inciting discord in other countries while local facilities crumble under poor management and a lack of strategic vision.
