Los Angeles Imposes Curfew Amid Rising Protests and Violence
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced a night curfew following a surge in violent demonstrations that erupted since Friday in protest of the deportation of undocumented immigrants.
During a press conference, Bass stated that the curfew would begin on Tuesday evening and will be in effect daily from 8 PM to 6 AM local time in downtown, with the possibility of extension for several days.
Protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement have escalated into violent confrontations with law enforcement, leading to incidents of looting and vandalism.
Bass noted that the recent events, including the looting of 23 stores, prompted authorities to make this decision, adding that she would consult with elected officials and security agencies regarding any potential extensions of the curfew based on the situation’s developments.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell disclosed that approximately 380 individuals had been arrested by Tuesday evening in relation to these events.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of 4,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines, without obtaining the approval of California Governor Gavin Newsom, who responded by filing a lawsuit accusing Trump of overstepping his legal authority and failing to consult with state authorities.
