Sir Liam Fox: Britain’s Support for Autonomy Reflects Morocco’s Diplomatic Strength Under the King

Sir Liam Fox, head of the British Parliamentary Group on the Abraham Accords, praised Morocco’s growing influence in its Sahara region, deeming this progress a reflection of a strong and wise diplomacy led by King Mohammed VI. He stated that British recognition of the autonomy plan bolsters this trajectory and affirms its validity on the international stage.

In a statement to the Maghreb Arab News Agency, Fox noted that the British government’s announcement of support for the Moroccan initiative serves as robust evidence of the effectiveness of Morocco’s approach to addressing the conflict, emphasizing that such support would not have emerged without a complete conviction in the seriousness and realism of the proposal.

On Sunday, the United Kingdom announced its supportive stance regarding the Moroccan proposal, describing it as “the most credible, feasible, and pragmatic.” This statement was made in a joint communiqué in Rabat, signed by British Minister of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Lammy and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita.

The communiqué affirmed that London will rely on this stance in its diplomatic endeavors at bilateral, regional, and international levels, indicating a clear political commitment to support Morocco’s efforts in resolving the conflict.

In this context, Sir Fox, who has held previous ministerial positions, stressed that London’s support for the autonomy proposal reflects a growing recognition of the strategic role Morocco plays. He pointed out that this move will give additional momentum to bilateral relations and open new horizons for cooperation.

He anticipated that the upcoming phase would witness an expansion of partnership areas, especially through joint projects and investments in the southern provinces, which he described as a new engine for development and a gateway to the African continent.

Fox underscored that this support is not limited to the political dimension but carries clear economic and geostrategic significance, acknowledging the central role that the southern provinces can play in areas such as renewable energy, transportation, and connections between Europe and Africa, all within a comprehensive developmental vision that provides the conditions for stability and prosperity.
