Improvement of Dam Reservoir Levels and Vegetative Cover Revives Farmers’ Hopes for a Promising Agricultural Season

Rainfall in March and April Boosts Moroccan Reservoirs as the Water Season Approaches Stabilization

Improvement in dam water levels and vegetation cover rekindles farmers’ hopes for a promising agricultural season

Ahmed Bouari, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests, reported that the water level in dams allocated for agricultural purposes has reached 5.2 billion cubic meters this agricultural season, which corresponds to a filling rate of about 37%, compared to 30% during the same period last year. This reflects a significant improvement in the water resources essential for the agricultural sector.

During a session of oral questions on Tuesday, the minister described the current agricultural season as variable, highlighting that it has been characterized by early rains in most regions of the kingdom during October, followed by a period of rainfall deficit between November and February, with variability in distribution across regions. He noted an improvement in rainfall conditions starting in March, thanks to heavy precipitation and snowfall, which contributed to rejuvenating agricultural conditions in various areas.

Precipitation recorded until June 5, 2025, amounted to approximately 302 mm, a decrease of 23% compared to a normal year, yet an increase of 14% compared to last season, bringing renewed hope for farmers entering a new cycle of rainy years following consecutive years of drought.

The season has witnessed a significant improvement in the state of vegetation cover, positively affecting the yield of autumn crops in suitable regions and giving a strong boost to spring crops, particularly legumes and oilseeds. The minister emphasized that the density of vegetation will improve the condition of the national livestock and assist in relieving the cattle affected by drought, heralding a more stable and productive season for national agriculture.
