Morocco Enhances Water Resources, Achieving Record High Avocado Exports
Morocco continues to strengthen its presence in the global avocado market, achieving a record export volume exceeding 100,000 tons, amidst an international market characterized by oversupply and declining prices.
The country has leveraged the quality of its local produce and stable supply chains to secure its position among the top exporters to Europe, particularly with rising demand from countries like Spain, which imported approximately 29,160 tons of Moroccan avocados in the first quarter of 2025—a 73% increase compared to last year and 158% from 2023, according to EastFruit data.
This strong performance has been bolstered by the expansion of avocado cultivation areas in recent years, with around 300 hectares introduced to the production cycle five years ago.
Agricultural expert Riyad Ouhtita noted that this season’s climatic conditions, including a cold winter and heavy rainfall, significantly contributed to increased yield, alongside the addition of new land under production.
Despite the environmental challenges associated with high water consumption in avocado farming, the improved groundwater levels this season have mitigated some of these impacts.
Ouhtita emphasized that Morocco, unlike some other countries, does not export water through avocado cultivation but implicitly imports it, considering the substantial water resources required for products like meat and wheat.
The impact of increased production on local prices remains contingent upon the volume designated for export, as exporting a large portion of the product could lead to price hikes in the domestic market. However, avocados remain a strategic asset for Morocco, particularly in the context of the Dirham’s exchange rate liberalization, where agricultural exports could help stabilize the national currency’s value.
Morocco has managed to confront fierce competition from Latin American countries, particularly Peru, which has doubled its exports to Europe, leveraging product quality and rapid delivery. This has reinforced Morocco’s position as a key player in the global avocado market.
