Coal’s Share Declines in Morocco’s Electricity Generation Mix

The share of coal in Morocco’s electricity generation mix recorded a significant decline in 2024, reaching its lowest level since 2017, although it remains the largest source of electricity in the country.

Data from the Energy Research Center showed that coal contributed 59.32% to the electricity mix in 2024, compared to 54.95% in 2017. In contrast, wind energy’s contribution rose notably to 21.23%, up from 15.43% in 2023.

Morocco’s electricity mix consists of seven primary sources, led by fossil fuels: coal at 59.32%, natural gas at 10.08%, and other fossil sources at 4.13%. Renewable energy sources include wind (21.23%), solar (3.63%), hydroelectric (1.53%), and biomass (0.09%).

The share of renewable energy in Morocco’s electricity mix in 2024 totaled 26.48%, up from 21.71% in 2023, reflecting progress towards the national goal of achieving 52% renewable energy by 2030.

Electricity demand in the kingdom reached a record high in 2024, amounting to 46.43 terawatt-hours, compared to 44.31 terawatt-hours in the previous year, indicating an increasing need to develop a sustainable and efficient energy mix to meet growing consumption.
