The Moroccan Dirham Ranks as the Third Strongest Currency in Africa, While the Algerian Dinar Falls Outside the Rankings

A recent comparison of the strongest African currencies against the US dollar as of May 2025 has highlighted significant disparities in the performance of national currencies across Africa, reflecting differences in economic stability and monetary policies among countries on the continent. The Moroccan dirham secured the third position, benefiting from a resilient exchange rate system and balanced financial fundamentals.

The Moroccan dirham continues to strengthen its position in the African monetary landscape, supported by gradual reforms and an economic diversification strategy that has mitigated the impact of external shocks. Interventions by Bank Al-Maghrib, foreign investment inflows, and remittances from the diaspora have contributed to maintaining exchange rate stability and bolstering confidence in the currency.

In contrast, the Algerian dinar experienced a notable decline, landing in the 23rd position in Africa, indicating its weak performance against the dollar and significant loss of value over recent years. This decline is attributed to the fragility of the Algerian economy, a heavy reliance on oil and gas exports, and the absence of financial and structural reforms capable of stimulating production and diversifying income sources.

This ranking reflects a shifting economic reality in Africa, where countries that embrace planning and openness are advancing, while others struggle to break free from reliance on rentier practices or modernize their monetary systems.
