A South African Newspaper: Morocco is the Top Tourist Destination in Africa

The South African newspaper “IOL” reported that Morocco is, by a significant margin, the top tourist destination on the African continent, thanks to its historical sites and stunning mountainous and desert landscapes, surpassing Egypt and South Africa.

The newspaper noted that Morocco welcomed a total of 17.4 million visitors in 2024, compared to 15.7 million in Egypt, 10.25 million in Tunisia, 8.92 million in South Africa, and 2.4 million tourists in Kenya.

It stated, “Africa is back at the forefront of global travel destinations, whether it’s discovering the wonders of Morocco, shopping in its markets, exploring the pyramids of Egypt, or experiencing a safari in Kenya.”

The newspaper observed that tourism in Africa is experiencing steady growth, as increasing numbers of individuals from various parts of the world seek experiences that blend nature, history, and culture across the continent.

Recent statistics for 2024 show a notable increase in international arrivals, with several countries recording significant growth compared to the previous year. This growth reflects a positive development for the continent, supported by good infrastructure, a more robust digital connectivity, alongside targeted efforts to promote local destinations.

The newspaper added that the year-on-year growth not only reflects the continent’s diversity but also its efforts to make travel more accessible and attractive for visitors worldwide. The growing interest in authentic travel experiences, whether cultural, environmental, or adventurous, also contributes to this increase.

In this context, the South African newspaper points out that North Africa remains at the forefront, with countries like Morocco and Egypt attracting large numbers of tourists due to their geographical proximity to Europe and the variety of historical and coastal attractions they offer, making them popular destinations for international visitors.

Regarding countries in the eastern and southern parts of the continent, the newspaper highlights their pivotal role in nature and wildlife tourism, through safari experiences and stunning landscapes that continue to captivate visitors.
