Portugal Eases Electricity Supply Restrictions

Spain and Portugal
A A

Portugal announced the continuation of easing restrictions on electricity connection capacity for imports from Spain, after electricity exchanges between the two countries were halted last month due to a power outage.

The Portuguese electricity distribution company, Redes Energéticas Nacionais, announced on its website that the maximum limit for importing electricity from Spain will be raised to 1,500 megawatts, from May 19 to 26, between 9 AM and 8 PM local time, according to Bloomberg News.

There will be no restrictions during other times, while Portugal will also export electricity to Spain.

Following the power outage, the electricity distribution company in Portugal had announced restrictions on electricity imports with a maximum of 1,000 megawatts between 9 AM and 7 PM local time, and 2,200 megawatts at other times from May 12 to 19, as part of an ongoing “stabilization” process.

It is worth noting that the power outage on April 28 caused a blackout in both Portugal and Spain for several hours, affecting public transportation, communication systems, and other services.
